Monteverdi's last opera «L'incoronazione di Poppea» tells the story of the marriage of the emperor Nero with Poppea Sabina. Christian Spuck, the designated director of the Zurich Ballet stages the feminine guile of the power-hungry Poppea with strong duets, trios and complex tutti. He also uses film and spoken elements. Lead by Monteverdi's dramatic Renaissance music, the ensemble dances its way through the turmoil of love, passion, intrigue and death.
In his work, Spuck crowned Eric Gauthier to Roman emperor. He danced Nero, the Emperor of Rome, who is actually married to Ottavia, but covets the wife of Ottone: Poppea, the courtesan with an unquestioning desire for power.
Christian Spuck's career is closely connected with the Stuttgart Ballet: he completed his training there, danced in the ensemble and was appointed in-house choreographer in 2001. For the 2012/13 season, Spuck will become the successor of Heinz Spoerli as director of the Zurich Ballet. Spuck was awarded the German theatre price DER FAUST 2011 for his choreography Poppea/Poppea.
«Choreographer Spuck achieves a completely unique, intensive body language which changes almost seamlessly from fluid movement into awkward mechanics.» Die Zeit, Hamburg
